This study presents the results of research that sought to demonstrate that the use and construction of simulation models, with AI techniques, can promote Systems Thinking in the classroom context in Science Education. To this end, we adopted Qualitative Reasoning (QR), an area of AI, to represent phenomena in Natural Sciences that can be addressed in High School. We used Systems Dynamics as a theoretical basis for the development of Systems Thinking and the DynaLearn platform as a tool to build and simulate qualitative models. This platform allows visualization of causal relationships between components of a system and representations of mathematical functions for the calculation of qualitative values. Data collection involved qualitative (questionnaires) and quantitative (statistical analyses) research techniques. The results indicated that the participating high school students are able to represent natural phenomena with skills inherent to Systems Thinking through the construction of models. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences in the students' understanding of complex systems, demonstrating the recognition of concepts necessary for systems thinking. The data suggests that the construction and manipulation of qualitative models, using a Learning by Modeling approach and from the perspective of Systems Dynamics, can develop fundamental skills in Science Education for Systems Thinking.
