Abstract

The use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in educational contexts has expanded the possibilities for developing instructional resources while also raising debates regarding reliability, epistemological limitations, and pedagogical mediation. This study analyzes the potentialities and limitations of ChatGPT (GPT-4-turbo, free version) in generating instructional models and analogies for the concepts of Chemical Equilibrium and Chemical Kinetics, two central and widely recognized abstract topics in Chemistry education. The research adopted a qualitative, exploratory, and experimental design, involving the interaction of three users with different histories of platform use through a standardized sequence of prompts aimed at generating representational images, graphs, and analogies. Data were analyzed from an interpretative perspective, based on the theoretical framework of scientific modeling discussed in the study, considering the conceptual quality of the outputs, the recurrence of errors and hallucinations, variations across interactions, and the pedagogical potential of the generated materials. The results indicate that ChatGPT performed better in text generation, particularly in the production of analogies, although these frequently reproduced conceptual simplifications and limitations when not critically mediated by teachers. In contrast, the generated images and graphs showed a higher incidence of conceptual inaccuracies, especially regarding the representation of the dynamic nature of Chemical Equilibrium and key aspects of Chemical Kinetics. The findings also suggest that the history of platform use may influence the quality of responses in tasks requiring greater conceptual elaboration, although this effect was not consistently observed across the different types of representations generated. We conclude that ChatGPT can serve as a valuable supporting tool for the initial development of instructional models, graphs, and analogies, provided that its use is accompanied by prompt refinement and critical teacher mediation.
